Out the Door in 3 Minutes

Sometimes we wake up late and sometimes we just seem to run out of time but we need go-to’s to feel put together in a hurry. I have broken it down to a 3 minute routine with only 3 products. It is my essentials – mascara, concealer, lipstick – that’s it.

I used the Clinique High Impact mascara, which feels light but makes your eyelashes look beautifully long and natural.

Then my all time favourite concealer, boi-ing by Benefit. It’s super creamy and high coverage, so I place it under my eyes to lighten the dark circles, and over a couple of blemishes. I find even with acne-prone skin, this concealer doesn’t break me out and allows for my natural skin to be more prevalent while covering some blemish areas.

Finally lipstick. I love this colour, I got a sample from Sephora of this Marc Jacobs lipstick in the colour berry rouge. I will be purchasing the full size once this is complete. Love the smooth and easy application, and it doesn’t dry your lips out so there are no cracks and flakes.

The final product, is as follows. You can still see some under eye area but that’s the point, we do not need to look flawless. It’s about enhancing what we love most in ourselves, and feeling confident. And it helps that this routine is under 3 minutes. img_8603

Saving Money in 5 Simple Steps

We all like to save, not spend where we don’t have too and once in awhile be able to splurge on something we really want. But how do you save? What do you need to know to save enough? Here are my top 5 tricks to save.

  1. Save $2 from every bill break. This means you buy a coffee and split $5, save 2.
  2. Have a change jar. Simple find change in your pocket? Put it in the jar.
  3. Use cash. Tapping your card allows for mindless spending. Take cash out for the week and budget it. Do you need the 4th coffee?
  4. Mental budgeting. What I mean is think of all your “small” expenses. Three coffees = $6. Bagel = $4. So in total I’m at  $10, if I do this everyday I’m at work or school thats $50 in extras for the week. That’s not gas money, or groceries, or savings.
  5. Cut yourself some slack. Saving money can be hard, especially if you’re not used to it. If you can, buy the morning coffee but maybe not the mid-day one. Bring one from home, don’t deprive yourself but find solutions.

How I Organize Life

Life get’s busy – especially around the holidays. I’m also going back to school in January for nursing! But this adds to the stress. So here are some tips on how I organize my life.

I’m huge into agendas, phone apps and a calendar I can see from my bed so I can always write something down and let it go out of my mind. It’s good to be in the know, but it’s better to be less stressed.

Above is my wall calendar. It is my monthly overview. So I write work shifts and appointments in but that is about it – its my month at a glance.

I then have my phone apps. This includes the calendar pre-loaded on and a calendar app that helps me with my weekly glances. (See below).

I also then write out in a big agenda so that when I’m working on the computer or need to remember something I can just write it down and then transfer it to either my phone or wall calendar. The other bonus is the apps will send you notifications when something is coming up and I have a 15 minute warning before appointments or work shifts.

Overall, this is my main attack of keeping my head above water and I hope it helps you out too.

Affordable Cleansing System Review

I have a clarisonic – it’s amazing. I then lost the charger for it and to replace that alone is $30. I was at a small drugstore with my mom when I came across the Danielle Deep Facial Cleansing System. It retails for about $30-$40 CAD depending on where you buy.

This brush is great bang for the buck.

It comes with three heads; a soft brush, silicon brush and buffer. Great uses for each, a gentle cleanse, a harsher exfoliation or a nice polish. It also runs off AA batteries. Too me this is a huge bonus – I can’t loose it and the charger will never malfunction. Now I wanted to put it to the test so I had some BB cream on with a layer of oil naturally produced with some powder.

Although it may not look as dramatic, you can clearly see the level of shine has gone down and the acne is more noticeable and not as caked over top. It doesn’t leave my skin red or irritated and after taking a makeup wipe to ensure everything was off it came back clean.

The only downside is like most machines you cannot go near the eyes, so you are manually taking off eye makeup. But hey what’s new?

Overall huge thumbs up, 4/5.

Estée Lauder Review

Now I know I’m usually about the affordable but decent makeup products – however as I age and with some troubling skin I know sometimes we need to invest in better quality makeup and skincare that we use. For the last month I have been using the Estée Lauder Idealist (Pore Minimizing Skin Refinisher) and the Double Wear (Stay-in-Place) Foundation.  The refinisher runs about $70 CAD and the foundation is about $45 CAD.

Now I know $70 seems like a lot for a face serum but this is magical. It does not break me out even if used all day with makeup, it smoothes my pores, feels so fresh and clean on my skin (not heavy or thick), and makes my face glow in the perfect non-oily way. Although perfectly paired with the foundation, I even use it with my drugstore brands and it still enhances all the good qualities. You put in on before moisturizer and it helps absorb right into the skin. Trust me it’s a great investment because a little drop goes a long way.

Now for the foundation – also incredible. Same idea where a little drop goes a long way, and that makes me feel like my money is well spent not only on quantity but quality. It claims to be long-wearing and last up to 15 hours, now I don’t usually have makeup on that long but because I sweat and have oily skin this is a great offer for me. It is non-transferable, meaning once it’s on and set, I’m not going to put on a baseball cap and have that everlasting makeup stain mark from my forehead. Another perk is the multitude of shades that it comes in. It is a medium coverage but very buildable and has a semi-matte finish which is great for me. It doesn’t leave dry spots looking flakey or oily spots looking slick. My favourite bonus is that it’s oil-free and fragrance-free so no smelly makeup and longer lasting yet again.

Overall, I give both of these a 5/5.

I’m Sick.. Now What?

Safe to say I’ve been down for the count the last week, sinus infection, bronchitis, and more. So here are some of my tips and tricks on mending and improving your health.

  1. Hygiene! This seems basic but you need to be washing body everyday and brushing teeth and washing hair. As well, cleaning bed sheets after the brunt of the illness is passing and making sure clothes are washed and not re-worn. You want to kill all chances of bacteria spreading.
  2. Tea. This is amazing hands down. My go to has been chamomile and honey lemon. It is soothing on the stomach and throat and non-caffeinated. It is relaxing and aids in a nasty cough or upset stomach.
  3. Mouth wash. This is huge for keeping bacteria at bay in the mouth and throat. Anything helps.
  4. Mints. This helps keep sick breath manageable and coughing fits doable.
  5. Water. Part of being sick is dehydration. Keeping your body hydrated is key in helping it get stronger.
  6. Medication. If your doctor prescribes something – you need to remember to take it!

How to Get Fit.. right?

For most of us there is this every strive to get fit. But how do we do it; cardio, lifting, yoga? There are so many options in this day and age. Being a biology and psychology major, I love how the body works and how the mind is involved. So I’ve been doing research on this matter.

Cardio is key.

This is the biggest thing I’ve learned for fat loss, and it doesn’t have to be a 5km run, dance, laugh, walk, MOVE. That’s it simple.

Now here is the trick, build lean muscle. Muscle helps to burn extra fat. Now I’m not saying you have to get ripped, but light weights like 5 or 10 pound weights will help with weight loss and overall fitness.

Lastly, lighten up. If you miss a couple days or weeks or months, screw it – jump back on the train.

You cannot hate yourself into loving yourself.

So here’s an example I’ve what I try to do (disclaimer: I am by no means a professional in any sense of the word).

–> cardio 4-5x a week (I do count work as a big contributor to this because I walk and stand all day, minimal sitting)

–> light weights and body weight exercise 2-3x a week
