Revving Up Your Day with Self Care

It is 11:48 AM. And ladies and gentlemen – I feel so productive.

This morning I deep cleaned my car, which trust me, was very needed. I got a car wash, filled up washer fluid, filled up gas, cleaned the interior, vacuumed, and washed the windows. I had coffee with family, and listened to an uplifting spiritual podcast. This was not only productive, but included self care.

Self care is something I am continuously working on, sometimes it doesn’t exist in my life and sometimes it is in full force. When it is in full force, I feel like I can handle anything. A little self-care in the morning sets you up right for your day, and it is really so individual. Some like the gym at 4:30 AM, some like to wake up and pray, or cook breakfast or meditate. There is seriously so much variety and no WRONG way of doing self-care.

My personal favourites are waking up and listening to a podcast as I wake up and stretch. If I can I will scroll through Pinterest for some bible verses that uplift me or read over some I’ve written down for myself. I cuddle with my dog and make tea (currently cannot do coffee because of acid reflux – it has been an adjustment). Sometimes I will do a little clean of the kitchen for instance, and then settle in and figure out what I need to do for the day. I’ll check my calendar app for major things I’ve written to remember and then go from there. Ideally I would love to do yoga every morning, but sometimes that just doesn’t happen. Self-care is what works for you, it is not a judgement activity.

What are some of your favourite self-care that is realistic for you?

Benefits of Açaí We Actually Care About

I am on a mission to get healthier and lose weight. Some strategies for me, include eating breakfast – a healthy breakfast. So I made coffee (a necessity) and a big fruit smoothie with açaí added in. I hear a lot of benefits about this fashionable ingredient and a lot of “myths”; but what is actually important and seemingly real?

#1. Heart Helpful – Because it is so high in antioxidants it is bound to have helpful effects but in this case it aids in lowering cholesterol which in turn helps your heart not work as hard and overall keep cleaner.

#2. Digestion aid – Again because of the antioxidants, they have a good ability to aid in digestion due to being nutrient rich and high in fiber (and we all know fiber is helpful for many things).

#3. Immunity helper – It is high in that Vitamin C and ellagic acid which is said to be a dueling combo that helps boost your immune system. It is not a replacement for medicine if you are sick but can help prevent a cold coming on, instead of maybe your high sugar orange juice.

#4. Energy – Because it is overall a healthy supplement, it can lead to an increase in energy and stamina. I can attribute to this because of my large smoothie I’m drinking at the moment and feeling wonderful.

This is my main thoughts I’ve researched and feel are said to be true. Just like any other fruit or supplement there are pro’s but not miracle workings. So just be educated in what you consume and keep positive in finding solutions for you.

Doing You

What does this even mean? A lot of people now a days say you need to “do you”. So how do we do that?

Self care I believe is a huge epidemic. With that we are lacking in putting ourselves first. Jobs, school, family, friends, life happens and we tend to fall behind.

So here is your reminder to – do you.

Yes spend that $10 on a new mascara if it’s going to make you smile, or buy a pizza and eat most of it (or all, who cares?). Make yourself a good healthy breakfast, with your favourite yogurt and berries. Or the best yet, a huge cup of coffee.

Take care of your needs and yourself, even if you feel devoted to help others because if you can’t take care of you than you can’t take care of others.

It’s all about you and the pamper.

So lately I have not been actively blogging (and I’m sorry) but I’ve come into some health issues and the best advice I’m finally taking is sometimes ‘it’s all about you’. So I’ve taken the last little while to focus on priority matters and focus on myself. This has come to me re-taking up yoga, and walking a bit more. Spending time with friends and family and of course and mostly at home with my dog. So what’s some pampering I’ve picked up? Here’s a list.

  1. face masks – are amazing, and fun to experiment with.
  2. bathes – not only good for a sore body and stress relief, but with some scented bubble bath; winning combination.
  3. comfy clothes – sometimes it’s nice not to stress about what you’re wearing and some yoga pants and a long t-shirt go a long way.
  4. yoga – good for the body and mind.
  5. meditation – the just re-centres me and allows me to truly focus on how I’m feeling and let’s me breathe
  6. no makeup – now I know not everyone is comfortable but you should try it, it is freeing.

I’m Sick.. Now What?

Safe to say I’ve been down for the count the last week, sinus infection, bronchitis, and more. So here are some of my tips and tricks on mending and improving your health.

  1. Hygiene! This seems basic but you need to be washing body everyday and brushing teeth and washing hair. As well, cleaning bed sheets after the brunt of the illness is passing and making sure clothes are washed and not re-worn. You want to kill all chances of bacteria spreading.
  2. Tea. This is amazing hands down. My go to has been chamomile and honey lemon. It is soothing on the stomach and throat and non-caffeinated. It is relaxing and aids in a nasty cough or upset stomach.
  3. Mouth wash. This is huge for keeping bacteria at bay in the mouth and throat. Anything helps.
  4. Mints. This helps keep sick breath manageable and coughing fits doable.
  5. Water. Part of being sick is dehydration. Keeping your body hydrated is key in helping it get stronger.
  6. Medication. If your doctor prescribes something – you need to remember to take it!

How to Get Fit.. right?

For most of us there is this every strive to get fit. But how do we do it; cardio, lifting, yoga? There are so many options in this day and age. Being a biology and psychology major, I love how the body works and how the mind is involved. So I’ve been doing research on this matter.

Cardio is key.

This is the biggest thing I’ve learned for fat loss, and it doesn’t have to be a 5km run, dance, laugh, walk, MOVE. That’s it simple.

Now here is the trick, build lean muscle. Muscle helps to burn extra fat. Now I’m not saying you have to get ripped, but light weights like 5 or 10 pound weights will help with weight loss and overall fitness.

Lastly, lighten up. If you miss a couple days or weeks or months, screw it – jump back on the train.

You cannot hate yourself into loving yourself.

So here’s an example I’ve what I try to do (disclaimer: I am by no means a professional in any sense of the word).

–> cardio 4-5x a week (I do count work as a big contributor to this because I walk and stand all day, minimal sitting)

–> light weights and body weight exercise 2-3x a week

If you like fitness ideas and themes let me know by liking this and I will happily do more!

When life catches up

I have clearly taken a leave of absence after only a couple of blog posts but I have come to realize I love to write and need to write. Do you ever have that? A need that just internally satisfies you? Writing has always been that for me since childhood. So how do you make time for your small true loves?

  1. Plan it.
    • This is key. Whether you are tech savvy and use a smartphone app, or old fashion and love a day planner (I use both).
  2. Indulge.
    • Enjoy it! Allow this time for your passion to completely consume you in the moment.
  3. Repeat.

So what do you love to do?
