NYX Total Control Foundation | Review

I posted a mini haul earlier and this foundation was on my must try list. I wasn’t sure if I would love it because it’s consistency is quite liquified but I thought I’d give it a try.

It states that it is buildable coverage and one can build this up based off of how many drops you smooth over your skin. I took some pictures from 0 foundation to 3 layers of the foundation.

I love that this is so universally usable in coverage. There are days I want a barely there look and definitely days I want to be completely covered up. From left to right; starts with no foundation, 1 drop of foundation and finally a full 3 drops of foundation.

Retailing around $16 CAD is totally budget friendly for the quality that you get. A little goes a long way, and therefore you get more for your dollar. It lets you play with your look and vary on how you want to look for an individual event or day. It doesn’t leave you oily and it caused no breakouts for my acne prone skin – huge bonus.

Overall, I’d give it a 5/5 thumbs up.

Mini Beauty Haul

Ok ok I know I just posted I was saving money, but I went to my local drugstore and got too excited for these products and went ahead and purchased them. I only got 3 items but I’m still very happy.

On the left is the Smashbox Cover Shot: Softlight Palette ($35 CAD), and on the right is NYX total control foundation ($16 CAD) and Lingerie lip ($9 CAD).

Let’s start with the eyeshadow palette. I’m a big neutral girl, and as dark as I go is with brown tones. I saw this and thought it was perfect for me.

I feel like for $35, getting 8 shadows that are good quality and versatile are well worth it. IMG-2142

I think my favourites before even trying them will be – beach house, starlight and keeper.FullSizeRender

I’ll do a look with this soon.

As for the NYX lingerie lip, I got the colour ‘pushup’. It’s very neutral for me and really compliments my skin tone right now. The NYX website describes it as: ” Slip into something seductive with Lip Lingerie, our new weightless liquid lipstick with a plush matte finish. Available in a range of color-kissed nudes…each sultry shade will coat the curves of your lips with irresistibly creamy color.” Um, sounds amazing.

Last, but definitely not least the NYX foundation. I’m not sure the acutal name for the colour as I cannot find it on the box to save me, but its code is TCDF07 – I’m fairly light with a tan right now. So its a light beige roughly. The site description is: “From sheer to full, your ideal coverage is just drops away with our new Total Control Drop Foundation! Fine-tune this velvety, matte foundation with the included dropper. Simply adjust the number of drops until you create the look you’re feelin’ today. Want more coverage? Add more drops! Buff expertly using the TOTAL CONTROL DROP FOUNDATION BRUSH for a seriously smooth finish”.

I love that this gives me coverage options. It totally suits me, some days I want that #nomakeupmakeup look and some days I love my full coverage.

Overall I’m really excited to try these products out and do some looks with them. If you’ve tried any of them let me know what you think!

Full Face Routine

I posted on Instagram a picture of me with a full face of makeup that I did for Easter gatherings and asked if anyone would like to know how I did it – so here it is!

image_01

Let’s break it down into parts: eyes, lips, face

  1. Eyes – I used a tarte palette (tarlette in bloom) but I basically used a light brown all over and a slightly darker brown in the crease. I didn’t want a sharp line so I didn’t use tape to cut it (favourite trick for a sharp edge). And BLEND. The best part and it creates a soft effect. I then used my skinny eyeliner by Marc Jacobs (Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner). I make dots along my lash line, and then just connect the dots! And I used my Voluminous L’Oreal mascara – a classic favourite.
  2. Lips – Simple. Chapstick. I love Nivea.
  3. Face – I started with my Clinique Moisturizer (moisture surge extended thirst relief), and then my Estée Lauder serum (Idealist) and then my foundation – double wear by Estée Lauder. So good, I have done a review on it and I loved it. I don’t usually conceal I just build up coverage where I need it, which is a great product feature of the double wear. Then I set with powder, I used Rimmel Stay Matte.

I don’t always do a full face, I’m usually a 10 minutes and out the door girl but this was super easy and made me feel great (hence the selfie).

Let me know what you think!

Ready In Under 5 Minutes//Full Coverage

So as touched on before I’ve been having some anxiety and depression, I’m also unmotivated some days to wear any makeup. There is also the side of waking up late and having no time to get ready.

So here is how I get ready in under 5 minutes WITH full coverage.

  1. Neutrogena Moisture Oil-Free Moisturizer
  2. Mix L’Oreal Youth Code BB cream and Kat Von D Lock-It Foundation (about 2:1 ratio)
  3. Touch of bronzer to eyelids as eyeshadow, and overall on hallows of cheeks and upper forehead to lightly contour (currently using my older mac one)
  4. Add Revlon Bold Laquer Mascara
  5. Setting spray of choice (mine is NYX matte finish)

Especially in winter moisturizer is essential, then mixing a full coverage foundation with a bb cream leaves skin dewy, moisturized and fully covered. Doubling up bronzer as an eyeshadow also cuts down on time but still adds a little depth to your look. The mascara I use is killer, and adds length and volume and then simply just set it with a matte spray (oily skin = too much shine without matte).

This hands down is how I look put together with almost no effort on my rushed days and bad days.

Kat Von D Lock-It Foundation

I am a sucker for cheap anything, ranging from food to makeup. This comes from trying to be money savvy, and living as a student through university. But now that I work and am shortly graduating, I’m looking for worth it investments. So as a typical 20-something woman I glided into Sephora.

Now I am the first to say, I love makeup but I do not know much about it. Kat Von D was an inspiration growing up, paving a way for women and looking badass doing it. So I thought why not try her foundation line?

With 68 colour tones to match with I thought I couldn’t go wrong. So being the money savvy girl I am I made sure to get my skin tone matched, and then went all in and for a higher end foundation – $42.00 wasn’t too painful.

The website claims its creamy and pigmented and a long-wear liquid formula. It is definitely a full coverage foundation, which is much needed when dealing with adult acne or even discolouration. I would be careful with the matte finish, although lovely for people like me with oily skin – would definitely flake on drier types. And to add as bonus, it is vegan and completely cruelty free.

Now for the real test results.

I was told it would best set with a powder, and so being the good student I am I followed suit. I have to say I love this foundation, but I definitely noticed I have to truly prep my face for it – it is not a throw on and go sort of routine. Although typically oily, my chin had flaking bits of foundation on the first test. With a little research and much better preparation however, it continues now to look flawless. And a little really does go a long way, which makes my investment feel well appreciated.

Out of 5 thumbs up? I’d give it 3.5
